Bloemfontein, also known as Bloem, is the capital of South Africa's Free State province; and as the nation's judicial capital, it is one of the three regional capitals in South Africa (the other two being Cape Town, the political capital, and Pretoria, the administrative capital) and the seventh largest city in South Africa. Located at an elevation of 1,395 m (4,577 ft ) above sea level, the town is home to approximately 520,000 people and is part of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality with 747,431 inhabitants. This became a host city for the FIFA World Cup in 2010.
Bloemfontein hosts South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal, Franklin Game Reserve, Naval Hill, Maselspoort Resort, and Sand du Plessis Theatre. Numerous museums are located in the city including the National Women's Memorial, the Anglo-Boer War Museum, the National Library, and the Oliewenhuis Art Museum.
Bloemfontein also hosts the first interactive planetarium in sub-Saharan Africa, the Naval Hill Planetarium and the Boyden Observatory, an astronomical research observatory founded by Harvard University.
Bloemfontein, with its abundance of these flowers and the annual rose festival held there, is popularly and poetically regarded as the "City of Roses." The city's Sesotho name is Mangaung, meaning "place of cheetahs".
